New Guidance for Returning Apprentices

The Quality Alliance has published new guidance aimed at supporting apprentices following the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This guidance is intended for training providers, employers, and apprentices. The Quality Alliance has produced the guidance to ensure that affected apprentices receive adequate support following their return to work and training.

Taking the form of a checklist, the guidance includes reminders to:

    • Discuss both on and off-the-job training
    • Consider a new risk assessment and safeguarding review
    • Ensure the right mentoring and support networks are in place

There is also a strong recommendation to check how prepared apprentices are for End Point Assessment.

This is particularly essential as the assessment format may have changed due to the pandemic.

The Quality Alliance is overseen by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (the Institute) and brings together a range of organisations involved with ensuring the quality of apprenticeships.

Members of the alliance include the Education and Skills Funding Agency, the Department for Education, Ofsted, Ofqual, the Office for Students, the Quality Assurance Agency, Universities UK, WorldSkills UK, the Association of Colleges, the Association of Employment and Learning Providers, and the Federation of Awarding Bodies.

Jennifer Coupland, chief executive of the Institute, said: “The pandemic has disrupted so many aspects of our lives and for many people that includes apprenticeships. As restrictions lift and many apprentices return to training, this focused guidance will help make that transition as smooth as possible.”

“We want as many training providers, employers, and apprentices as possible to take on board the advice and make sure the right support is in place.”
